We have a gizmo that is about 30" long with a 3 pronged "grabber" on the
end; squeese the knob on one end and the 3 prongs open up to clamp over a
hard to reach object.  Granted ours may not open wide enough to pick up the
handle of the brush, but would grab the bristles reaching thru either port
of entry or exit.
We  bought the gizmo several years ago, probably at "Big Lots" and it is
mainly used to pick up bolts, nuts, screws or whatever we've dropped under
the engine or trailer.  We use it often!
Mayabe even one of those grabber tools marketed to seniors to reach cans and
boxes from high cabinets would work.
Hopefully you could find or make something like this tool.
