Congratulations! A number of us on the List have rescued an AS or 
two. A lot of fun ahead of you.

Lowes used to carry door skins which I found more useful than Luan. 
Most Luan is 1/4 inch. Door skins are about 1/8 inch and many of 
them are birch which easier to finish than luan. Most people call 
Luan Philippine mahogany. But it is really a cedar much like Spanish 
cedar - very soft and open grained which requires a lot of fill even 
for painting. In its favor though, most of it is put together with 
waterproof glue. I didn't believe that at first but put a small 
piece in a bucket of water and it'll still be laminated a month from 
now. I built a small lightweight cat boat for my grandsons from it 
and its still floating. I am not sure you need water proof wood for 
indoor cabinets though.

Actually, 1/4 inch plywood is not very heavy and you can buy it in 
oak, walnut, cherry, birch, etc.
