From the looks of it, your bed will never be flat if you leave those 
braces there.  So that would not be a good solution fo mine since I 
do want to be able to convert to a FLAT bed at night.

I think my solution is going to be to reinforce the shelf with an 
additional piece of wood that sticks down to keep the cushion from 
going under it. Occasionally we get shipping pallets made of 
Mogoganny 4x4s.  I'll just wait for one to come in and use it as my 
spacer.
