you are burning up the compressor from an "under voltage" condition.  when it is
warm, the compressor works harder to turn the hot gas into liquid.  the effort
is less when it is cooler.  but regardless, that a/c unit should be plugged into
a 30a outlet.  If you are in a hurry to replace the unit...
Age, yes, the unit might be low in gas and that will contribute to the problem.
