I have to "second" what Charlie said below.  One fellow at Port O'Call took 
out the bolt at the bottom of the aluminum casting.  This gave him about a 
six inch lever arm.  The spring tension tore the short arm from his grip and 
gave him a very nasty cut in the palm of his hand.  It was not a good thing!

WARNING:  Listen to Charlie's advise so you end up with a four foot lever arm!
