Patti,

They don't want to make using the 110V heating element to easy for fear it 
will be left on when there is no water in it. If you have that option there 
will be a switch mounted on the back of the water heater by the bypass 
valves. This is an item that definitely needs to be on a checklist for 
moving. It only takes seconds to burn out the heating element when there is 
no water in the tank. You can use both electric and gas heat at the same 
time. It will halve the recover time.
