I think the Cummins 230 is an inline 6-cylinder is it not?  The 7.3 liter
Powerstroke is in my Ford Excursion and it's a great engine but I doubt it
would fit in the place where the Cummins would reside.  Would it?

I've driven vehicles many years ago with just a 190 hp Cummins hooked up to
a 10 speed Roadranger transmission.  The loaded vehicle was 80,000 pounds or
40 TONS and it still pulled long grades like Mount Eagle in TN and more.
Granted, the trip going up wasn't that fast BUT neither was the trip down
off the rock! ;)  I never went *down* a grade faster than I went *up* the
grade as that was always the rule of thumb to be safe.
