Hi Tom

Airstream did offer a Propane Powered Onan Micro-Lite 3600 Watt Gen 
as an option in 93 or 94 it was not a popular item so it was 
discontinued.  This is likely one of the units you are seeing.  The 
gen was installed under the credenza which was make considerably 
larger to house it.  

We have installed several Micro-Lites in Airstreams.  We usually put 
them under the forward dinette seat and have a custom made fuel tank 
mounted in the spare tire carrier.  It is a pretty involved 
installation but it does work quite well when it is done. 

Often we put another connector between the tow vehicle and a switch 
on the dash so you can power up the Gen while driving down the road.  
Then a half an hour or so before stopping for the day or a lunch 
break etc you can power up the air and the trailer is comfortable 
when you stop.
