You might want to think of it this way:
The solution to pollution is dilution.

If you only have a little in there and you dump, some of the less
"fluid" things may stay behind. If you don't keep some water in there,
these things will turn into paper mache in your tank. 

There should be some water in there to begin with say a half gallon or
so (?) to give the deodorant something to swim in. If you only are there
one night and you MUST dump, you should add at least another 2-3 gallons
BEFORE you dump, and then follow up with a flushing 2 gal. That way you
get a proper tidal wave to move everything out.
