I am sure that this list has had several discussions of gas vs diesel engines.
point is, we all know where pulling is the hardest - at high altitudes with
steep grades and altitude changes of as much as 10,000' in a day, it all boils
down to pure, brute horsepower.  without it, you are relegated to creeping up
long grades in low gears and burning up transmissions.
iow, my 5.3L suburban which now has a T400 tranny after burning up the electric
OD pulling thru Raton South bound.  The diesel does it with low rpm and very
high compression.  The gas does it with high rpm and low (relatively)
compression.   
Most of us - as we have watched ourselves being blown off the side of the road
by a diesel pu pulling a 20,000+ lb 5er going up a long grade, know which is
best.  
I have been an airstream mechanic in another life and been living full time in
an Overlander for the first three years of my marriage (30 yrs next year) so
yes, I know a lot about airstreams and fixing them and pulling them.
That suburban is wonderful for its purpose which is being a Texas Stationwagon
but it is not the perfect tow vehicle for a heavily loaded 31'.  Not by any
stretch of the imagination UNLESS you keep it out of the Rockies and other
ancillary mountain chains.
