Mike,

When a thermocouple is installed it is essential that it not be over 
tightened. A 1/4 turn past finger tight is all. If it is over tightened the 
diaphragm in the end will be crushed and the thermocouple will either not 
work or work only briefly. After that it sounds like the gas valve has given 
up internally.
