Ah, the solution!  Duh!

I unplugged the connex to the solenoid.  Checked continuity and didn't
re-try the thing.  Plugged in mains to keep things cool.  Walked around
in little circles... Tried gas again. Ah Ha!  Workezez just fine. 
Diagnosis: un, and re connecting the valve cleaned the micro-corosion
off the spade connectors.

Why don't I listen to myself when I say; Keep it simple, stupid.
