Dan,
  Don't tow in OD with that transmission. Normally, the line pressure 
drops off when it shifts to OD, allowing the clutches to slip under a 
heavy load. This is what destroys the transmission in short order, not 
any "hunting" or trying to find the right gear. It may be that the 
TransGo shift kit solves that problem, so you might not need to worry 
about it. (the TransGo kit that I installed in my Dodge raises the line 
pressure substantially) The 700R4 transmission has full line pressure 
when it's in 3rd, that's why they recommend towing in 3rd, not OD.
