New subject: Transmission problem

This is obviously not an A/S problem, but could be, if towing a
heavy unit.

As a part of our rural all-volunteer fire department, we have a
nearly new Ford F-550 PSD 4x4 w/4 speed auto trans. The truck is
heavily loaded at 15,500 #, (17,500 # GVWR). With only 3000
miles on the unit, but pulling in steep mountain terrain, the
transmission has developed a problem and locks into 2nd gear when
hot. This "lugs down" the PSD engine and requires operator to
shift into low range 4WD and travel very slowly to "get home".

Ford is repairing/replacing the torque converter under warranty,
but we are concerned about the basic design being overloaded. A
proposal from an aftermarketer to replace the OEM torque converter
(12" single stage) with a 13.5" triple stage is under
consideration but the possible cost of several thousand $ is hard
to swallow. Still, we want the truck to do its job.

Since many of us drive Fords (without apology), I wondered if
there was information available re: this problem, which might
have implications to A/S towing as well as for our fire truck..
Any similar experience from listees and solutions/suggestions
would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hunter ------ If this is too far away from the list topics, pls
advise and replies can be sent "off list". Thanks.
