[A/S] Tow vehcles

  To each his own, but I have never towed with anything heavier than 
a half ton, other than the 95 Chevy G-20 van and they call it a three 
quarter ton, but tires and everything to me looks like a half ton. I 
have a 86 Suburban, with a 6.2 diesel in it and 373 gears, bought it 
new and hve 275,000 miles on it and still tow with it. The 95 van, 
350 engine with 373 rearend and a 96 Suburban,350 engine with 373 
gears and all are automatics with overdrive. I have towed a 73, 31 
footer, 76 31 footer and 85 31 footer, all Airstreams and have had no 
problems towing. I have towed from Ohio to Texas, to Flordia and 
Illinois. Coming from Texas one time we towed through the Ozarks, 
with no problems. In my opinion, why beat yourself to death in a 
heavy sprung vehicle, spend extra money on bigger tires and cost more 
fuel to operate, because they usually weigh more.You spend more time 
riding solo, than you do towing. I was told many years ago by my 
Uncle, who towed trailer all over the country, including Alaska, that 
if you can keep up with 18 wheelers on hills , what more do you need. 
I have thought about this often and I feel he is right. I tow between 
60 and 65, because I feel this is a safe speed and I am more relaxed 
at this speed. Everyone has his own opinion on these things, but this 
is just something to give everyone to think about. I will say the 96 
is probably, to date, the best tow vehicle of the three. We got right 
at 12 mile the gallon towing our 85 31 footer back from Flordia. This 
again is my two cents worth. Richard in Ohio
