The reason for the ammeter is to verify the operation of the I-P and
CW. You can actually do that with your DVM (you do have one, of course?):
Connect it across your batteries and power up the converter. The voltage
should rise to 14.4, hold there for a short while, depending on state of
charge, then drop to 13.6. It should stay at 13.6 for about a day, then
drop to 13.2 volts. As long as the voltage never rises above 14.4,
you'll not cause the batteries to explode.
