  One of the most important things is to get matched, NEW batteries. 
Oftentimes, batteries will sit on the shelf for many months before sale, 
and it's nice to get a pair that hasn't thus suffered. They have a 
manufacturer's date code, but I don't know the details offhand.

I use plain ol' wet, unsealed "RV/Marine/Deep Cycle" batteries. These 
are not the best as far as all-out performance, but are pretty good as 
far as "bang for the buck". The only thing better is a pair of golf cart 
batteries, but those often won't fit in the compartment.
