Hi Jim,
I purchased a Gear Vendors Over/under. Check out their WEB 
site "www.gearvendors.com"(maybe without the "s"). You will find alot 
of answers to your questions. I chose the Gear Vendors because of the 
1. Testimonials 2. OEM supplier to Detroit 3. I was in NHRA and seen 
their units first hand   3. The electric over hydraulic shift.
Our unit bolts to the back of a C-6, 3 speed auto. The installation 
shop had to remove the transmission tail housing and bolt this in 
place. This box provides 6 forward and 2 reverse(GREAT for backing up 
hill)and the "added" ratios fall neatly between the stock gearing. 
This unit would certainly help you, but I run 4:11  rear ratio and 
with the over/under it works best for me. That 4:11 is what gets me 
around a slow mover on the steep grades... I drive in the Cascades 
and Sierras, plus everything else out West.
