My family bought my '77 Airstream just a few months old, estate sale. first 
towed with '74 Ford Elite 351, then '75 Grand Marquis 460, then '78 DeVille 
425
I've used first,,,,,'76 NewYorker Brougham 440, then '79 Mark V, then '76 
Town & Country 440, and now, my FAVOURITE! '94 Buick Roadmaster Estate LT1 
(de tuned Corvette V8) 5.7L 260hp.
those '70's cars, as much as I loved them, were strangled with primitive smog 
controls etc. all those cubes and less than 200 hp, far less in some cases.
the Linc and Chryslers would be in 2nd uphill in the northeast barely able to 
do 45, the Buick is ZOOMing along at 65 in third! Now,,,,when I get my '80's 
34ft limited at 1500lbs additional I'll let you know:) I met several people 
with later model Limiteds, w/oak cabinets corian etc. with '95/'96 Fleetwood 
LT1's. They said they were fine, but wouldn't go over the Rockies with 
them...hmmmm
the MOST important thing you can do with any of these cars is get the best 
and largest trans cooler, run with Mobil 1 synthetic fluid, and get a 
shiftkit installed. that's what I've always done. even with the Buick.....the 
Buick also has a reprogrammed computer (via a Hypertech Power Prgrammer ) 
with 160deg thermostat and other mods, and runs cool,,,,,very cool,,,even 
uphill in the summmer with the ac runnning.  Something I can't say of the 
'70's cars. The idiot lights never came on with the Mark, but with the 
chryslers, the temp gauge was always just below the redline.
I suppose if I'm ever rich enough to get a 34ft slideout at 10,500lbs GVWR, 
I'll have to get a truck:(
