I'm not a believer in auto alarms either. I have , however, put in a
circuit breaker that has a key you remove when you are about to leave
the car someplace for an extended period. It has a myriad of wires
attached to the back that are supposed to confuse the would be hotwire
expert. The car won't start unless the disabler key is inserted.
I also see that most new vehicles have that   kind of ignition disabling
key with the computer chip thingy.
How this would work on a trailer I'm not sure. My feeling is that  the
more chance a thief thinks he has of getting caught, the farther ahead
you are in protecting your trailer. So if you have an alarm, let the
thief know by stickers, security company stickers, camera monitored,
beware of dog sign, etc. The more he thinks he's liable to get caught or
chewed by a large salivating monster, the less likely it is that he will
want to break in.
The big problem with alarm sirens etc, is that so many of them are set
off accidentally, that no one pays any attention anymore. When was the
last time you called 911 when you heard  a car alarm go off?
Finally where you store it is a very large factor in the amount of risk
involved.
By the same token, however, 80% of the car theft claims I do are
vehicles stolen from the person's own driveway.
Moral- don't go home?
