  Fortunately, my storage yard is right behind my barn, so I don't have 
the problem some others do. However:

I think an auto alarm might be the best solution. They run on 12VDC, and 
draw very little current if the horn isn't sounding. I'd make sure that 
it can be triggered by switch closures and install a switch on the door.

The alarm system in my shop has a 12 volt backup battery that will 
probably run it quite a while. It's one of those do-all systems that can 
use motion detectors, infra-red photo detectors, etc. If you have solar 
panels and/or can keep it plugged in while in storage, that might also 
be a solution.
