Re: [A/S] Airstream Factory clearcoat fix
Janet,
I'm not trying to dissuade you from having the work done at the Airstream
service center but if you have white chalky spots, that sounds like
oxidation. Anywhere the finish has failed has left bare aluminum. If that
area has gone untreated for a period, it is oxidized. If it is not polished
it will show a different color and texture under the new clearcoat. You may
find that both Airstream and P & S will suggest polishing in that area.
Otherwise, the finish will look different between the areas with failed
finish and the remainder. That is the reason the Airstream service manager
referred me to P & S and why I paid P & S to polish the six end caps.
The Airstream service department may have been avoiding refinish jobs at the
time I had my trailer recoated. Possibly due to concerns about the
durability of the material and process they were using at the time. They
may now be confident of their material and process.
