Eric/Linda,

You are correct. Most, if not all of those axles were welded on. The axle was actually 
over width for the frame. It was necessary to shim out the frame to take the axle. A 
modern replacement axle uses the common bolt on mount and actually fits narrower and 
improves the tire to wheel well clearances.
