Re: [A/S] Need dry weight of '78 Excella500
Hi Jan,
Our 1977 31' Airstream Excella 500 weighs between 8450 to 8550 pounds
depending on our degree of pack rat tendencies we have in any one year. When
"A Weigh We Go" weighed our Airstream twice (5 years apart), the results
were nearly the same. I have never weighed the weight dry because we've
never unpacked it. The GVW plate riveted to the front indicates 8500 pounds.
We tow our '77 31' Airstream Excella 500 with a 1978 Ford E-250 Van, 460 CID
engine, 5 core radiator, 30,000 BTU transmission oil cooler and factory
trailer towing package. To date, this trailer/truck combination has taken
us to every state in the USA, each province in Canada and 2/3rds of the
states in Mexico. At all times we have felt this combo more than adequate.
Our Van can tow like a warm fuzzy pussy cat or with just a touch on the
accelerator, it can become a rip snorting fire breathing tiger. If you'd
like to talk with me in person about this, we'll be at the Florida State
Rally in Sarasota. Our truck and trailer won't win any beauty contests, but
they are superbly equipped for the job we want them to do.
As for your question about towing with your E150 & 351CID V8, that depends
on where you plan to tow it. In my opinion, your Van would probably be
adequate if you plan to be a flatlander east of the Mississippi River. <g>
