Re: [A/S] Re: Overload Devices On Tow Vehicles

Jim. A proper rated, properly installed load
equalizing hitch, transfers two thirds of the tongue
weight to the tow vehicle. If done properly, as in
your case, your hitch would transfer about 500 pounds
to the truck. That being the case, then 125 pounds
would be applied to each tire.
In your case, since the front axle weight remaind the
same, then it points out two things.
First, because of the rigidity of your tow vehicle,
your hitch rating should be reduced to 750 pounds.
Secondly, the air pressure should be reduced to
minimum, in the air bags.
It is easier, of course, to reduce the air pressure.
You should have to pull up one more link on your
chain. This should not cause the rig to be unstable.
This will allow you to add some of the tongue weight,
to the truck's front axle. Reducing the hitch bar
rating, would also allow you to transfer more weight,
to the front axle.
Reducing the hitch rating, will reduce the amount of
the road shock that is transfered to the trailer, from
your tow vehicle.
The scale weights, after either or both of these
suggestions, will speak for themselves.
