In these discussions of weight distribution and hitch setups I have notice one factor 
not mentioned. While the static weight numbers seem relatively small and manageable, 
the dynamic weights experienced while moving on an uneven road surface are not 
mentioned. Any hitch or suspension system has to handle dynamic weights not just 
static weights. While not claiming to understand all the physics of it I am quite sure 
an hitch setup is exposed to much higher weights the static hitch weight. A 600 lb 
hitch weight on a simple ball mount may not cause much of a shift in weight on the
front. Take that same load and hit a bump on the road at 45-50 mph and notice the 
bounce induced into the front of the truck. Having been there, done that I know that 
the front end "feel" gets very light at that point. The effects of any equalizer hitch 
will nearly eliminate that momentary loss of "feel". Put the loss of "feel" in a 
situation with wet or slippery roads or the need to make a sudden maneuver and you can 
get into big trouble in big hurry.
While I will occasionally pull a trailer around town without an equalizer I will not 
hit the road without one.
