Hunter,
       Ventilation is necessary for moist air evaporation. If ventilation is 
restricted the inside of the cabinet will take on the excess moisture as will 
the vital operating components of the micro. Is one inch on each side enough? 
A cautious maybe, but most all of the units we have installed in my memory 
ask for one inch clearance min. top and sides. My feeling is the unit will 
fail before any cabinet damage occurs.
