  I think you'd want glass, not plexiglass or other plastic. The glass 
should be tempered so that hailstones won't break it. I don't know what 
standard sizes of tempered glass is available other than 34" X 76" 
(Patio Door size), but there probably are some off-the-shelf lites around.

It's very important that the cover over the cells be as transparent as 
possible, even a coating of dust cuts the output significantly. I wash 
our panels occassionaly. The normal scratching that plastic seems to 
aquire would be detrimental, IMO.
