Years ago, Airstream used the "signal stat" 12 volt
connectors that had round "aircraft type" terminals.
This type of connector is far superior to "any" flat
type blade connector. The round terminals "wipe"
themselves clean when inserted or removed, and
therefore, unless severely corroded, always made
connection. 
The real problem with the flat blade type connector is
that one grain of dirt or sand, will and often
prohibits proper connection. Further, since they are
not plated, they often corrode easily.
Airstream had to make up the old umbilical cords,
which is expensive. They now use the flat pin type
connector, basically because they can purchase the
cord made up, and only need to install it. 
Industry standard? Perhaps, because of cost and
certainly not because it's better or more reliable.
Progress? I don't think so.
If the aircraft industry used flat blade electrical
connectors, we would certainly have many more fatal
aircraft crashes. Ask anyone in the aircraft business
which is the superior connector.
I for one will only use the round type terminal
connectors. I want brakes on my Airstream when I want
them and not have to think about a connector. Risking
my tow vehicle and trailer, as well as my life, is
worth far more than the $25 bucks. Living on the edge,
is not my "cup of tea."
