Harvey,
  I've seen incompatibilities between Male and Female connectors, to the 
point where I had to replace one or the other. They're SUPPOSED to 
interchange, but didn't, and the symptom was an inability to plug 'er in.

If Tom's wife is the handy one, I can't think of a better project for 
her. Replacing a connector isn't a big deal, just a bit tedious.
