Good explanation, Harvey. I can't help but wonder why using the gas engine 
for downhill braking doesn't affect the transmission the same as the 
diesel? Or does it?

BTW, back in '96 when I was considering a diesel (finally bought the Dodge 
V10 Gas, partly because of the braking issue), Dodge wouldn't warrant the 
_engine_ if an aftermarket exhaust brake was installed. I don't remember 
any problem with the tranny warranty, but maybe I am not remembering 
everything correctly.
