Hi Jim,

A simply as I can say it... when you are driving a gas engine truck and 
coming down a mountain you take your foot off the gas and the truck engine 
slows down.....

When you are driving a diesel and take your foot off the *gas* the truck 
keeps "freewheeling" The exhaust brake (similar to the 18 wheeler "jake 
brakes" slows the engine down which eliminates the need to downshift or step 
on the brakes.
