Over the years I have used stains by dozens of different manufacturers. This 
is what I can tell you from my perspective. I agree that pigmented wiping 
stains are more forgiving in application. Most of what we apply here are of 
that variety. Of all the stains off the shelf at the home centers Minwax 
works very well. Minwax has many colors to choose from and use for custom 
mixing. The solvent base that is used in Minwax is not as offensive as 
industrial coatings yet still must be handled and used with care to cause no 
ill effects. Be sure to let it dry completely (24 hr. or more) before 
coating. Min wax also has a product that has the stain mixed with the 
coating. In a brush application it is best to steer clear of that particular 
product to avoid uneven color streaks. It will also tend to disguise the 
grain more and more with each coat applied.  As far as purchasing an 
industrial coating. In our area Sherwin Williams will not sell to the general 
public. The solvents in the industrial coatings are very hazardous. Designed 
to be applied, dry, and be coated in a very short time, They are formulated 
to be used as a system with stain, sealer, top coat, to achieve best 
adhesion, and finish. If your account is approved to purchase industrial 
coatings the very minimum you can buy would be a gallon, at a high cost, and 
custom mix one gallon customers get put on the "when we have time" list. I 
have waited 4 weeks to see a sample match only to wait another 2 to get a 
stain for the project. Most accounts will buy stain in 5, 30, or 55 gallon 
drums. If by chance you find a local Sherwin Williams paint store that has an 
industrial stain base sitting on their shelf, the pigments behind the counter 
will not work correctly in them. You will find the tints will not stay 
suspended in the base giving you dots and smears of raw color. The only tints 
that work correctly will be found at the Industrial Coating locations. In 
short the use of Sherwood brand of industrial coatings from S.W. or any 
industrial coating for that matter, in my opinion would be a lot of extra 
headache for little or no gain. One thing that has been mentioned before and 
deserving of another, wear a charcoal filtered mask when using any of these 
products.
As for stripping that is something I can't help you with only did it a couple 
of times until I realized my best bet was to take it to the furniture 
stripper and let then deal with the mess.
