[A/S] Inverters

I must be missing something here.  As I follow this thread it appears people
use an inverter to operate their cell phone and/or laptop and/or GPS in
their tow vehicle.  All of these devices normally operate on DC.  Why
convert DC to AC only to have it converted back to DC by the converter that
comes with the device?  Aren't there DC plugs for all of these devices which
would plug directly into a 12 volt cigarette lighter type outlet?

I understand the need for an inverter in the trailer to operate things that
start out with an AC requirement.

By the way what does OPD stand for?
