Thought I'd join the rock guard discussion -- since I mostly lurk by 
digest. I bought a 1971 27ft Overlander Twin last summer from a guy 
who had just come back from Alaska. He made a "super" rock guard from 
1/4" aluminum diamond plate to protect the whole front end on the 
AlCan Highway.  It also has a stone guard over the front window.

I cut the aluminum plate rock guard down some because it was so large 
interferred with lifting the stone guard. Have a look at these recent
