Lou,
On your lights, Do you have a test meter to check the one wire that hooks
up to your running lights?
They are grounded to the body to get the current back to the neg. post of
your battery.
This is a very bad way to ground anything (in my experience).
I would suspect that a positive wire is shorting the circuit out probably
in you taillights since they worked before you did the work.
I too had to totally restore my taillight housings.
I also had many problems with my running lights until I replaced them all
with much better lights.
The ones I found (at a tractor trailer supply house) have metal bases and
different type bulbs (ie:much better). They have a better o-ring seal to
keep water out which is the biggest enemy of any light like that.
They look identical to our original to boot.
I also found new taillight lenses (both clear and red) and replaced all
of mine. Mine looked rather old as they were 29 years old.
