John I had a 1970 that had the same problem. I solved it by using a 
good quality glue and artist canvas for backing. you must remove the 
tambor from the slide, place it face down on a board, put pieces 
togather, apply glue with brush making sure there are no gaps, apply 
canvas and place board on top. usa several clamps to insure the 
surfaces are flat. also cut canvas about 1" short on each end to 
allow ti to run in track.
