Re: [A/S] Re: Wheel question
not to confuse the issue, but it comes up from time to time on one of the
other lists of which i'm a member... there are actually two types of wheels
which are call 'split rims'... the kind we're used to are comparable to what
are called 'combat rims' which allowed for rapid tire-changes under fire...
air down the tires a little, and simply unbolt the wheels... insert fresh
tire, bolt them up, pump up the tires and go... the truly dangerous 'split
rims' use a 'split ring' like a retaining ring which holds the tire onto the
rims... these are ordinarily changed inside a steel cage by trained
individuals who remain outside the cage... i sincerely doubt that these are
what are found on earlier airstreams. this reminds me of the widespread
misunderstanding of the unusability of the hydraulic/electric brake
controllers with modern abs systems... everybody 'knows' it, but it just
ain't so...
I think the original A/S bolt pattern is the same as older chevy pickups.
Numerous aftermarket wheel makers make 'universal' wheels with fit on
multiple bolt-pattern wheels (e.g. 'American Racing')
