Don, according to a report from the 2001 International Rally,
representatives of Atwood said in a seminar that Atwood recommended against
using the after market electric heating units in their water heaters. I
can't remember if it was said that doing so would void the warranty or not.

I don't understand the big price for installation. The only thing that might
be tricky is mounting the electric thermostat on the tank so it could sense
the tank's water temperature. I suppose the tank insulation is removed for a
big enough spot to mount the thermostat and it's glued on somehow with
something that can stand the temperature. The heating element goes in the
hole for the normal drain plug and 110VAC has to be supplied. There's a
receptacle in my Tradewind right behind the water heater so that's no
challenge.

The prices on the ones I have seen are more like $100 than the $70 figure
someone mentioned. Seems to me you would need to use a lot of free (or
included electricity) and a lot of hot water to justify the cost on economic
grounds.
