I have a '78 with the same vacuum over hydralic system. All the 
trailer needs to operate is a source of vacuum(usually the tow engine 
manifold) and a controler that sends a proportional electrical signal 
to the trailer brake unit.

The vacuum supply has to be routed to the rear bumper of the tow 
vehicle and a suitable quick connect installed ( the trailerside 
connect must be replaced unless you can find the matching unit). A 
check valve is installed near the manifold. any one of a number of cab 
mounted controllers can be used. The signal wire goes through the 
trailer umbiilical along with the lighting wires.

It's no big deal. I really like the original brakes. They are really 
strong, the parts are still available for most of it too. I wouln't 
trade mine out if you paid me.  :)

The factory repair manual shows the hook-up, too
