Hi Patti:   Once a long time ago after some service which included a new ball
since the shank was supposedly cracked.....to make a long story short (and hope
this will be your easy problem to solve too)  they had put on a different sized
ball and that is why it was not releasing!!      Balls are not expensive and you
should always carry an extra one in case the shank cracks but be sure it is the
right size shank for the weight of your trailer too.    Call Reese at their 800
number and  they are very helpful
and if I remember right all the other parts of a Reese hitch are guaranteed and
they will will replace for free      You might ask them if there is a Reese
distribution ceter anywhere near where you are?   there is one in corona CA
