[A/S] M/S Mud and Snow

M/S stands for Mud and Snow.

Us old folks from the northeast (and other wintery parts of the country)
remember the introduction of snow tires (in lieu of the then only other
option - chains).

Since radial tires to not "squirm" as they roll, like bias tires, they have
better traction on slippery surfaces.  If the tire manufacturer can achieve
some level of traction in snow (I don't know what level is) they can rate
the tires as M/S.

What this means to the driver is that when the police or highway patrol
limits access to a road to vehicles with say "chains or snow tires", your
highway M/S tires qualify as snow tires (even though they don't have the
aggressive tread ordinarily associated with "snow tires".
