Jim,
 As someone else suggested, first thing is to check all the wiring
between tow vehicle and trailer. In theory, the Univolt isn't even in
the circuit when you're not connected to shore power except for the
branch circuit fuse panel.

You would be wise to replace the UniVolt with a StatPower or
Inteli-Power charger/converter, because the UniVolt is not the best unit
out there. It's a typical constant-voltage converter, which undercharges
the battery when it's 'low', yet overcharges it when it's 'full'. That's
in addition to the annoying hum.

But get the shorts fixed first.
