John, maybe you could ask your friend and post what he says here. I think 
many of us would be interested in this, especially as time goes on and the 
plasticoat deteriorates more and more.

I have replaced the deteriorated plasticoat on the front center section of 
my '91 with aluminum paint. I am not entirely satisfied with the result, 
but it is better than what I started with. Getting a smooth even coat is 
crucial, and topcoating the aluminum paint with a transparent shiny coat 
(like the original finish) makes it look almost like bare aluminum. I did 
the entire panel, and that helped to hide the changeover. Perhaps if I had 
hired a pro to spray everything on evenly, it would be perfect. I rolled it 
all myself with 4 inch trim rollers.
