I have ordered a GMC with an 8.1 engine (now used instead of the 454).  
Strongly considered the diesel, but decided against it mainly because of the 
small fuel tank.  If you get a GM truck with a long box they have 
approximately a 32 gal tank.  The short box has about a 26 gal tank.  I 
thought this was too small for a diesel tank, since it is not as readably 
available as gas.  I checked into aux. tanks, but they are pricey.  While 
still looking, I found a new 2001 3/4 ton Suburban with an 8.1, but it did 
not have the Allison transmission that they match with that engine in the 
pickups.  Mainly for that reason, I didn't consider the Suburban further.  I 
like what I have read about the new Allison transmission and am looking 
forward to putting it to the test.  For 2001, I don't think the Duramax 
diesel was available in the Suburban.  I don't know what may be available for 
2002.
