Bob, I don't really know about a Ford but I have a 1 ton Chev with a
454 4 speed std transmission. Mine was making just about the same noise
when I would slow down with my rig hooked up. I was also using my
clutch to slow the rig down. I later found out that my clutch was going
out and the noise I was hearing was the clutch plate slipping with the
extra weight from the rig added to my truck. The shop that put my new
clutch in said not to use the clutch to slow down the rig because it
would cause the clutch to wear much faster. They said to depress the
clutch and let the trailer brakes slow down the rig along with the
truck breaks. Hope this might help.
