Diane,
 Are you able to light the pilot and it won't stay lit, or won't it
light at all? If the former, the thermocouple could be loose (don't
overtighten it, just a bit more than snug!), if the latter, it could be
a bad gas valve. If the lines have gotten air in them, it can take a
long time to bleed them before the pilot will light up.

Where are you located in Michigan?
