Re: [A/S] safety Fire extinguisher location
The worst kind of a fire is one at sea. Which is the source of this advice
as to where to locate a fire extinguisher (from a marine fire expert who
spoke to a group of motor boat owners many years ago).
Do NOT put the fire extinguisher near the fire hazard. [Even though, at
first blush, this appears to be the logical thing to do.] Instead, mount
the fire extinguisher BY AN EXIT. Of course the first reaction, in the
event of a fire, is to get out. Then, if the fire isn't too bad, one might
get a fire extinguisher and go after the fire. [No one in their right mind
is going to run thru a fire to reach the fire extingiuisher! Hence the
reason to mount it by the exit.]
I personally like a carbon dioxide extinguisher, as it is completely
nontoxic. You can put out a grease fire on the stove, and still eat the
food. The reason they are not very popular, is because of the need for a
very strong, high pressure tank (which is expensive) compared to the light
weight tank of a powder extinguisher, which does not need to withstand the
high pressure of liquid CO2.
