Re: [A/S] 1968 Cabinet/Bulkhead Finish
Hi Jim,
For what its worth... I used Watco "Blond Oak" finishing oil(cause
the original finish was a blond-oak stain) on all the wood surfaces
of our '66 Trade Wind. The old surface was "spotted" with an old
semigloss finish that had become brittle, completely gone in
spots. "Checking" of the wood was very notable. After four washings
with strong detergent(Simple Green) and a couple of rinses, I used a
paint brush to apply four coats(no sanding) of the Watco oil, as much
as the wood would absorb(each application). The first application
was absorbed before I had progressed from front to rear. The next
coats were absorbed at a slower rate. For the last application, I
waited two weeks between. The result is a no-sheen finish that
retains the old patina. Last week I applied Old English to all the
wood... to sorta help keep it moisturized?
We like the result so well, that I'll contunue to oil the surfaces
(until I get tired of the chore).
Bob :)
