Just purchased a 86 Ford Econoline with a Sportsmobile conversion
this spring ....(www.sportsmobile.com)  My plan was exactly like yours but i 
fell into this van and couldn't say no (even My wife agreed).
We purchased a set of Dunlap 8 pl tires went through the breaks.
replaced both batteries converted the air to 134a changed all the fluids 
except coolant and set out for a test run from Adrian MI
to Stafford VA.(about 565mi one way )All without trouble. its
a joy to be able to stand up and change. Set up by poping up the top
and plugging into the juice; after years of tent camping and in a
pop-up trailer this just fits the bill for what we want for now.
It still needs a new paint job (sun burned light blue peeling off).
Best gas mpg was 18.3 least was 14.6 mpg running solo(300 ci six
w/ AOD).

I've been taking to heart the discussion on hitches etc and read with 
interest all advice that is offered. it keeps me going on the
refitting that i'm doing to our 72 22' safari.At First i thought it would 
take 3 yrs for the whole project to come together -- it still
may but at least we can resume camping and exploring.....

Any ideas where to fit a Honda harmony generator with the van i don't
want to carry it in the  van nor do i want to carry it in or on the A/S.... 
I've thought of mounting a hitch haul platform on the
front of the van. Pros/con?????
